As a news app, Shades aims to keep readers informed and engaged, but its homepage made it tricky for users to find content that truly mattered to them. With no way to filter or sort through posts, the experience felt overwhelming and less intuitive than it could be. Without clear categories or personalization options, users were likely spending more time searching than engaging, resulting in missed opportunities for stronger connections and longer, more meaningful app sessions.

I designed a filtering feature for Shades’ homepage that lets users sort content by categories like politics, culture, and lifestyle, pulling directly from the Evergreen database to keep everything organized and relevant. This update gives users more control over their browsing experience, making navigation faster, personalization easier, and the app overall more engaging, ultimately boosting satisfaction, session time, and loyalty.
